Take heed to the man who walks with cock in hand

MuthaWit comes home to roost with release of epic LP "men & women (la Revenge de Uncle Baldy)"

What has been said about MuthaWit:

”Boston Fielder and MuthaWit are Gods in the universe they have created and these songs, which you must hear, are their Adam and Eve, cloned to a fallen and disrupted infinity.” - The Wire, UK

”MuthaWit is simultaneously urban and tribal; a meeting of the musical hemispheres, mutatis mutandis and presto! - a carnival of twisted soul.” - Magnet Magazine

April 16, 2011 – New York, NY.  URB ALT experimentalists MuthaWit release their debut album men & women (la Revenge de Uncle Baldy)” on April 20.  The 3-24 piece musical collective have created a 10 song audio hybrid that sighs with the openness of the rural South while screaming through the clamor of the urban North. MuthaWit singer/songwriter/filmmaker/producer Boston Fielder has become a kinetic figure in the global music/visual arts scene by spearheading the annual URB ALT Festival in NYC and Atlanta for the past 10 years. During that time MuthaWit’s crew has worked with musical lights such as FunkadelicKyp Malone of TV on the RadioTwin ShadowBrendan O’BrienParis Suit YourselfLeila AduJneiro Jarel, Res and many others.  “men & women (la Revenge de Uncle Baldy)” is a charged headphone homage to Tupelo, MS jazz/blues legend George Smith a.k.a. (Boston's)Uncle Baldy who is a largely forgotten but primary influence on Elvis Presley’s early musical career.  The infinite dance of past vs future and acoustic vs electronic is at the core of the album. Boston states that “‘men & women’ was produced in exotic locales such as under my loft bed in Harlem; inside a broiling attic in Stone Mountain, GA.; in a pissy Brooklyn urinal; and on a front porch in the cottonfields of the Mississippi Delta. We kept it raw and live when possible.  Our only sound proofing was piles of dirty socks.  So, the album definitely smells great…if you like cornchips.”

"men & women (la Revenge de Uncle Baldy)" is available for digital download on 4/20 exclusively through MuthaWit’s website and Bandcamp.com page.  The download also offers special merchandise such as t-shirts, DVD videos, pens and unreleased tracks.  The physical CD will be released June 3rd when Muthawit launches its 2 month North American tour in New York City during the URB ALT Festival.

International Women's day

So surfing around the web today I came across this day. International Women's day and I thought to myself... Wow that's pretty cool! And I know a good number of women really pushing to be all they can be. Two that come to mind right away related to music are Honeychild Coleman and Leila Adu. Both are friends of mine, but they REALLY are working their art game! Both are artists/musician/writer/producers and they also have traveled a good amount around the world. In the near future I will be sitting down with Honeychild once again to catch up. And when we do I will be sure to post more in depth on her plots of world domination. Leila is presently overseas and right this minute I am not sure where she may be. You can check both artists I have mentioned at their links I am posting below. Have a beautiful Sunday and a more beautiful and productive week!

Best,
Ed Marshall

They celebrated and she heard

It was January 16, 2011 in Williamsburg and the club thumped Punky Reggae as the attendees trickled in. The line was short, it was frigid cold and icy. I made my way around the club and up to the highest floor where the talent was. Some of the players I knew and others I would say hello and move on. "5 minutes everyone!" rang down the dressing room hall. I exit and head back down to the clubs main floor and position myself for the start of the show. The show begin with still images of her and then a video of one of her last interviews. The video easily 20 feet high of her expressing her philosophy had everyone in the room locked in. Locked in on her every word... The host and hostess for the night gave great praises of her life's travel and personal experiences with her. As the performers graced the stage with stories and heartfelt laughter and tears. They would perform their hearts out for her this night. Now The Music Hall of Williamsburg was packed and people danced to the celebration of her legacy and future of all true warriors. Her true friends and family showed up for her that Sunday evening til the break of dawn. Exactly the way she would have showed up for them. Ari Up though I only knew you for a short time... it is quite clear that you were a true warrior spirit.

Rest well Arianna Forster!

ARI-UP PUNKY REGGAE BIRTHDAY PARTY: 01/16/11

So I tend to travel these streets of New York City. Documenting images of random views and compositions, in the process meeting lots of different types of people. Many of them being artists of all types, probably because I too am an artist. So whenever I run across an amazing new find this blogspace will be where I share the findings of. Today I have decided to share information about an event this Sunday January 16, 2011 @ 7pm in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. I was lucky enough to find a little time with Carolyn Honeychild Coleman. She is a New York based multimedia artist/musician out of Brooklyn and a great friend. We'll revisit her in the near future with a lot of the wonderful work she is creating. For now a brief conversation with her about the event this coming Sunday you shouldn't miss!

Ed Marshall:
Hey there Ms. Coleman
Carolyn "Honeychild" Coleman:
Hey
Ed Marshall:
So I'm sure you've been running wild for this Sunday huh?
Carolyn "Honeychild" Coleman:
Word to the mothership! Rehearsal every day...
Ed Marshall:
Yeah I'm pretty psyched for you guys and the event overall. Sounds like a great group of artists from around the country!
Carolyn "Honeychild" Coleman:
Indeed!
Ed Marshall:
Isn't life insanely beautiful at times?
Carolyn "Honeychild" Coleman:
Yep! Thanks and praises
Ed Marshall:
Everyday or else!
Carolyn "Honeychild" Coleman:
You know it! So congrats on your cyber hustle!
Ed Marshall:
Thank you for the congrats. We're doing our best to do what we love and live to see it. Life is way too short, so we have to hit on every level. The woman everyone is celebrating this coming Sunday was a great example of that way of life. Ari Up of the legendary female punk group The Slits.
Carolyn "Honeychild" Coleman:
Yes indeed! Jan 16th at the Music Hall of Williamsburg, All ages $15 adv & $20 at the door day of event. I believe this event may sell out.. Big up in The New Yorker, Village Voice and upcoming Weekend Edition of NY Times.
Ed Marshall:
The Music Hall is a nice space... All ages thats great! I'm sure the press and all the word of mouth from fans and many artists friends will bring good numbers. Is it an early event?
Carolyn "Honeychild" Coleman:
Doors at 7pm, show starts 8pm - 11pm Tix have been on Ticketmaster under Neneh Cherry for weeks now. Are you still planning to shoot?
Ed Marshall:
I believe this show is going to be one not to miss. Hearing a lot of the music from most of the musical contributors... It feels like its going to be one of those perfect mixes of Love for Ari and the art itself. Yes I'll be there for sure.
Carolyn "Honeychild" Coleman:
Participating artists, lead by Musical Director Ira Heaps, include original and current members of the Slits, including Tessa Pollitt, Hollie Cook, Neneh Cherry and AnnA Ozawa; Bruce Smith of PiL and the Slits; members of Brave New Girl; Band Droidz; legendary Beefheart guitarist Gary Lucas; Afrobeat superstar Wunmi Olaiya; Felice Rosser (Faith);Dunia Best and Aram Sinnreich (Brave New Girl, Agent 99); the Punk Professor Vivien Goldman Dee Pop (Bush Tetras, Radio I-Ching); Lizzi Bougatsis (Gang Gang Dance); Afro-Punk avatar Tamar-Kali, King Django; Honeychild Coleman; Barbara Gogan; Sherelene Nubro; Lisa Samuels and many luminaries from the punk and reggae worlds backed by Ira Heaps and the True Warriors performing classic Slits hits, dancehall and previously unheard originals by Ari Up. Lyrical Readings and Remembrances by Michael Patrick McDonald, Greg Tate, Sara Marcus and Angela Jaeger (ex-Pigbag),Joly McFie of Punkcast.com and friends are throwing a PUNKY REGGAE PARTY and more special guest TBD.

Carolyn "Honeychild" Coleman:
Yes it's pretty incredible how many lives and hearts Ari touched... She really gave so much of herself Doing major blast tonight and can send you updated press release, many new names have been added. She was a True Warrior, if l must use her own words! I saw so many sides of her also on the road. She was kind to her fans and especially to children, she definitely had a clear sense of her purpose.
Ed Marshall:
Yes, everytime I had the opportunity to be around her she had a special kind of energy. Strong to say the least, she was definitely one of purpose.
Carolyn "Honeychild" Coleman:
Indeed. One of Ari's last interviews she said,"I'm not here to be loved, I'm here to be heard!" Pretty much summed it up.
Ed Marshall:
That right there makes it quite clear who she was.
Carolyn "Honeychild" Coleman:
Yep, It was not an easy path but she stuck to it. Being together with the group and hearing the stories- it's like she's still here with us! Also reading the lyrics now it is blowing my mind how CONSCIOUS she was between the ages of 14 and 18! The lyrics to Love and Romance, Typical Girls, deep! It's no wonder the Slits were friends with Poly Styrene of X-Ray Specs.
Ed Marshall:
True warrior spirits never die!
Carolyn "Honeychild" Coleman:
Yes True Warriors Forever!
Ed Marshall:
Well I didn't have a lot of exposure to her works back then. Really turned on to her more recently through you and the Apollo Heights guys. Again I wish she could have stayed a little longer. Just out of personal selfishness of course! You were very blessed to have had more intimate moments with her. This Sunday will be a great event with very positive energy in the music and imagery I can almost bet my life.
Carolyn "Honeychild" Coleman:
I do feel blessed. The timing was also symbolic. I got the call to go on tour with her on my birthday at 7:00am! What a year it has been...
Ed Marshall:
You know I had been itching to hear how the tour went, but once I heard of Ari's passing I thought it might be too much to go through.
Carolyn "Honeychild" Coleman:
Oh it was quite overwhelming when l heard I kind of went off the grid
Ed Marshall:
I'm sure it was... and you must have.
Carolyn "Honeychild" Coleman:
However, it made me realize we don't have tomorrow , nothing is guaranteed and all those other cliches. Sometime even though I get it. I still for selfish reasons wish she would have told us. Then reflecting I realize, Ari was a proud woman so l understand her choice now.
Ed Marshall:
Losing the people you love is tough! You know, I believe the people we love and lose... The ones that push in life always seem to push us forward somehow when they leave. I'm sure with Ari's personality she didn't want any sympathy or a feeling of people worrying for her. She seemed serious about her work, but almost selfless. Just not a selfish bone in her body... again only in my personal experience.
Carolyn "Honeychild" Coleman:
She definitely pushed us all! And yes l believe in retrospect she went out precisely the way she wanted the world to remember her She had so many plans! Spoke about the history and legacy a lot, onstage and in interviews.
Ed Marshall:
You know I know, you probably have a lot to do today and I don't want to hold you up. I would however like to spend more time talking about your personal work and what your future holds. In my opinion you are one of the hardest working artists here in New York City. An inspiration to many who know of you and I am here to help others that don't know get put on!
Carolyn "Honeychild" Coleman:
Thanks Ed!
Ed Marshall:
Looking forward to this coming Sunday January 16, 2011 at the Music Hall of Williamsburg!
Carolyn "Honeychild" Coleman:
Yes. Me too! Thanks Ed!
